Introducing: Studio D’Artisan

Noragi Sashiko Shirt

We have to admit, this was the first thing that drew us in with Studio D'Artisan. We saw this shirt and knew we needed to work with the brand. As you can probably tell, this isn't a Noragi Style shirt. The name derives from the days when people wore Kimonos as their everyday clothes. Clothing was very precious and was reused several times over. Farmers would take the tattered pieces of their old kimonos and sew them together using sashiko-style sewing. In order to replicate this, Studio D'Artisan has used a blend of slub and wooden yarns to create beige-colored stitching. They've also purposefully changed the style and direction of sashiko overall in order to mimic the hand stitching of the time. This work-style shirt is built to be worn either close to the body or as an overshirt. It's soft and warm and a real show stopper overall. This is Studio at its finest right here.

Heavyweight Check Flannel Shirt - Kakishibu

This round of Studio D'Artisan, our first, is all about the natural Kakishibu dye. Often referred to as the sun-dye, this form of persimmon dyeing goes back 900 years to the time of the Samurai. Lucky for us, and all the good people that still get to enjoy it...this art form was preserved. It creates a rich brown-orange color you simply can't get from other dyes. Studio is known for their exquisite quality, and this piece lives up to that standard. The incredible buttons and heavyweight fabric rival any other flannel we carry in the shop.

Indigo/Kakishibu Sashiko Denim Vest

We decided to start off with a bang for our intro into the world of Studio D'artisan. If you know us well, you know how well we love Kakishibu (especially when it's mixed with Indigo). Add sashiko into the mix and you can call us finished. This fabric has our ticket. It's everything we love in Japanese manufacturing. Kakishibu dates back to the time of the Samurai nearly 900 years ago. This particular process has often been referred to as the sun-dye because it gets darker when exposed to light in the dying process.

This round, they've gone with a crowd-pleaser. Indigo warp and kakishibu weft in a sashiko woven pattern. This fabric will be sought after for all time. We love the way it looks up front but may love the way it looks even further down the line. You can see some of the electric blues popping already from the one wash. We can only imagine how beautiful it will be with months and years of wear.

Indigo/Kakishibu Hickory Denim Vest

Thick, super uneven yarns are blended here to create this wonderful texture both in the warp and weft. This slubby and neppy texture is unique to a normally smooth "hickory stripe." They've also hit the fabric with a one-wash treatment to remove shrinkage and take a bit of the edge off. You'll notice a special edition Kakishibu leather patch, herringbone pocket liners, double slit pocket, and buckle back design. This is the cream of the crop of Japanese manufacturing. Keep in mind, this thing is going to fade beautifully with time and wear.

"Rockabilly" Tee Shirt

This was too fun not to buy. We loved the shirt done in the style of an old band tee-shirt, but with their infamous pig "Clipper." This one is specifically a rockabilly style as you can see from the greaser pompadours. The thing we were blown away by was the quality. The heavyweight cotton fabric feels so soft and so well built as everything Studio makes. This first round has definitely been a success for us having bought everything sight unseen. We are impressed beyond words.
